Four witnesses in Mau riots case turn hostile

Mau (UP) : The prosecution in the Mau riots case today recieved a jolt when four of its witnesses turned hostile and denied having made any statements to the police.

The witnesses also stated during direct examination that they did not recognise any of the riot accused, including legislator from the constituency Mukhtar Ansari.

Ansari and 32 others charged in connection with the communal riots in the town during the Dussehra festival last year appeared before District and Sessions Judge S K Tripathi.

An application seeking exemption from personal appearance was moved by Ansari and accepted by the court, which has fixed June 1 for the next hearing.

The communal clashes that rocked Mau last October left 20 dead and scores injured.
